Hyderabad metro rail work to begin in a month

Construction work on Hyderabad metro rail will start in a month's time, a top executive of the company associated with the project said. L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail , a subsidiary and special purpose vehicle of L&T Infrastructure Development Projects, has achieved financial closure for the project.
NVS Reddy, managing director, Hyderabad Metro Rail said the his organization will start handing over land to L&T in 15 days' time in a phased manner and they may start actual construction in a month's time. He said the design work is being done simultaneously and tendering process for rolling stocks is currently underway.
According to him, as many as 200 coaches are required initially. By September this year, orders will be placed and it will take may take one-and-a-half years for the firm, which will be shortlisted, to make the coaches and another six months for the trail run.
L&T officials along with senior officials of government departments such as traffic police, municipal and water board have conducted joint inspection of the rail route. The original project cost, estimated at Rs 12,132 crore in 2008, has escalated to more than Rs 16,000 crore in three years.
L&T, that inked a concession agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government on September 4, 2010, has already submitted a performance guarantee of Rs 360 crore to the state. The pre-construction works of the project has already started, and the soil testing and topographical surveys have been completed in most locations.
