Poor maintenance of roads costs the country about Rs 35,000 crore annually and erodes some 40,000 km of rural roads and 10,000 km of secondary roads, a report prepared for the National Transport Development Policy Committee suggests.

The report pegs the current replacement value at a massive Rs 900,000 crore. Describing the road policy as a vicious cycle of "build, neglect and rebuild", the report says bad roads increase vehicle operating costs, aggregating approximately Rs 20,000 crore annually.
